Kris Kringle is a Mispronunciation of the German Name “Christkindchen”

ADVERSITY – Face to Face

These postings are from the research about Christmas in the 1800’s for German families in Texas while writing the novel, “Adversity – Face to Face.” This novel was the first one written in the FAITH Chronicles.

“Christkind” is a Christmas gift-bringer in Germany. Our use of Kris Kringle in America is a mispronunciation of the German name. The German person is called “Christkindchen” or “Christkindl” or “Christkind”, derived from “Christkindl” who was introduced by Martin Luther.

All of these German names mean “the Christ Child” and refer to the baby, Jesus. For many years now, the “Christ Child” is the traditional Christmastime gift bringer in Germany, Austria and Switzerland.

We think Kris Kringle is used a lot in the United States, but not as much so as Weihnachtsmann is in Germany, “Santa Claus or Father Christmas.”

If you ever find a picture of the Christkindchen, you will notice a child with blonde hair, blue eyes and a pair of angel’s wings.

THE USE OF THE NAME KRIS KRINGLE IS ONLY HERE IN THE UNITED STATES. IN GERMANY, IT IS COMPLETELY UNKNOWN.

In a special Christmas giving campaign over Christmas, the Kindle version of this novel is being offered for free from Amazon.com between December 12th and 18th, 2015.
